GPS TIMESTAMP CAMERA

GPS Timestamp Camera for Professional Field Photos

Place the selected date, time, coordinates, project label and camera direction directly on a field photo so its basic context remains visible after export.

THE FIELD PROBLEM

What this workflow solves

A normal camera-roll image may be separated from its folder, filename or hidden metadata. A reviewer can then struggle to determine which site it shows, when it was taken or which way the camera faced. A restrained visible stamp keeps the details needed for day-to-day field review attached to the image.

Who it is for

  • Construction and environmental field staff working across several locations
  • Inspectors who hand photos to reviewers who were not present
  • Utility, maintenance and field-service teams documenting remote assets
  • Contractors preparing progress, closeout or before-and-after records

FIELD EXAMPLE

Documenting a culvert outlet condition

An environmental inspector needs to record displaced riprap at a rural culvert and make the location easy for the repair crew to find.

  1. Open the correct projectSelect the road project and start a session for the inspection date.
  2. Check the readingsWait for the location to settle, step away from the vehicle and confirm that the heading is plausible.
  3. Capture context and detailPhotograph the culvert outlet from a safe overview, then take a closer image of the displaced material.
  4. Add a precise noteUse a note such as “Outlet riprap displaced below southeast wingwall; approximately 2 m of exposed soil.”
  5. Review before savingConfirm the stamp does not cover the outlet or the exposed area, then save the record.

Result: The repair crew receives a readable overview and detail photo with the road project, capture time, coordinate and viewing direction visible on each image.

GOOD FIT

Use it when

  • Photos may be downloaded, emailed or separated from their original folder
  • A project contains repeated or visually similar locations
  • The viewing direction helps someone reproduce the viewpoint
  • You need a practical offline handoff from the field

NOT THE RIGHT TOOL

Do not rely on it when

  • The work requires survey-grade coordinates or a certified time source
  • Exact coordinates would expose a sensitive site, species or private residence
  • A visible stamp would obscure the condition being documented
  • The record must meet a formal chain-of-custody or tamper-evidence standard

SETUP

Relevant JotCam settings

Date and time

Enable only when the capture time adds value to the record.

Location format

Choose Decimal Degrees or UTM to match the project map and reporting convention.

Camera direction

Show the device heading when viewing direction matters; verify it away from magnetic interference.

Project or site label

Use the same short label found in the field plan, work order or inspection form.

Stamp position and text size

Choose a clear corner and the smallest size that remains readable without covering evidence.

SCREENSHOT PLACEHOLDERGPS and timestamp stamp controlsReplace with an authentic screen showing date/time, coordinate format, heading, project label, stamp position and text size controls.

LIMITATIONS

What the record can and cannot establish

  • Phone location accuracy varies with satellite visibility, terrain, buildings and device hardware.
  • Compass readings can be disturbed by vehicles, steel structures, electrical equipment and magnetic accessories.
  • The device clock can be changed and the visible fields are not cryptographically verified or tamper-proof.
  • An imported or edited image does not by itself establish the conditions of its original capture.

FIELD CHECK

Common mistakes

Turning on every field

Keep only the information that helps the reviewer; a crowded stamp can hide the subject.

Trusting a heading beside steel

Move away from vehicles and structural steel, then compare the direction with the scene.

Treating a format change as better accuracy

UTM and Decimal Degrees express the same device reading in different formats.

Skipping the image review

Check focus, subject coverage and stamp placement while the location can still be photographed again.

QUESTIONS

Questions about this workflow

Does GPS stamping require internet access?

No. JotCam uses location information provided by the device. Satellite visibility and device settings still affect whether a useful reading is available.

Are the coordinates survey-grade?

No. They are practical field context from the phone, not a substitute for a survey instrument or approved positioning method.

Should I use UTM or Decimal Degrees?

Use the format expected by the project team. UTM often fits technical maps; Decimal Degrees is common in web maps and general location sharing.

Does a timestamp prove when a photo was taken?

No. A visible timestamp is useful context, but it is not a certified clock or a tamper-evident record.
