UTM COORDINATES

UTM Camera App for Field Documentation

Print a UTM zone, easting and northing on field photos when the project map, field log and review team already work in that coordinate format.

THE FIELD PROBLEM

What this workflow solves

Environmental, infrastructure and linear-project teams often work from UTM grids, while standard phone cameras hide coordinates in metadata or show latitude and longitude. Copying values into a separate log takes time and creates opportunities for transcription errors.

Who it is for

  • Environmental monitors recording remote or repeated observation points
  • Infrastructure and linear-construction teams working from UTM maps
  • Utility crews documenting assets outside normal street addressing
  • Inspectors who need the coordinate visible in exported photo records

FIELD EXAMPLE

Recording an erosion-control deficiency

A monitor finds undercutting below a check dam on a long access road where nearby landmarks are limited and the project map uses UTM.

  1. Match the project conventionConfirm that the project expects UTM and that the displayed zone is appropriate for the work area.
  2. Let the location settlePause in an open, safe position and wait for a stable device reading before taking the record photo.
  3. Capture two viewsTake an overview that shows the check dam in the drainage, then a detail of the undercut area.
  4. Add the observationRecord what is visible and where it sits relative to the structure; avoid guessing at causes or dimensions.
  5. Compare before leavingCheck the stamped zone, easting and northing against the project map or approved field reference.

Result: The report photos use the same coordinate language as the project map, reducing office transcription while preserving a clear visual record of the location and condition.

GOOD FIT

Use it when

  • The project map, field forms or client deliverables use UTM
  • Work occurs across a large, remote or linear site
  • Crews exchange locations using zone, easting and northing
  • Coordinates should remain visible after a photo is exported

NOT THE RIGHT TOOL

Do not rely on it when

  • A street address or simple site label provides clearer context
  • The required position must be survey-grade or tied to legal boundaries
  • The project requires a datum or coordinate system not supported by the app
  • The work sits near a UTM zone boundary and the project convention has not been confirmed

SETUP

Relevant JotCam settings

Location stamp

Enable location only for records where a visible coordinate is appropriate.

UTM coordinate format

Select UTM instead of Decimal Degrees to show the zone, easting and northing.

Project label

Pair the coordinate with a short, recognizable project or site identifier.

Camera direction

Add heading where an observation is directional, such as an upstream view or north-facing slope.

Stamp placement

Keep the UTM line readable but clear of the condition, scale reference and important background context.

SCREENSHOT PLACEHOLDERUTM coordinate selection and photo stampReplace with an authentic settings screen beside a saved photo showing the UTM zone, easting and northing clearly.

LIMITATIONS

What the record can and cannot establish

  • UTM conversion does not improve the underlying location supplied by the phone.
  • Tree cover, steep terrain, buildings and poor satellite geometry can reduce position quality.
  • A coordinate without its zone is incomplete; confirm that the full stamp remains visible in cropped or shared images.
  • JotCam is not a survey instrument and should not replace required project control or approved GNSS equipment.

FIELD CHECK

Common mistakes

Leaving out the UTM zone

Keep the full coordinate visible; an easting and northing alone may point to the wrong place.

Skipping the project convention

Confirm the required coordinate system before the field day rather than converting a full photo set later.

Assuming the phone is exact

Compare critical locations with the approved project map, control or positioning equipment.

Covering the subject with the stamp

Use another corner or a smaller text size while keeping the coordinate legible.

QUESTIONS

Questions about this workflow

What is the difference between UTM and Decimal Degrees?

UTM expresses a location as a zone, easting and northing. Decimal Degrees expresses latitude and longitude. Both can describe the same device-provided position.

Does converting to UTM make the coordinate more accurate?

No. Conversion changes the notation only. Accuracy still depends on the device reading.

Can JotCam replace a survey receiver?

No. Use approved survey or GNSS equipment when the work requires controlled, repeatable or legally defensible positioning.

Why should the UTM zone stay visible?

The same easting and northing values can occur in different zones. The zone is part of the location.
